Broncbusters plow through Frank Phillips
By Mike Pilosof
Borger, TX-Garden City's offense was in fine form on Thursday.
Gaby Hernandez had a three-hit game, Audrey Graf hit her second home run of the season, and the Broncbusters steamrolled Frank Phillips 7-1 and 14-3.
After falling down 2-0 in the opener, Garden City answered with Ariel Denney's two-run single in the second that tied it before completely taking command when Madison Brasher clubbed a bases-loaded triple in the fourth followed by Denney's sacrifice fly that made it 6-2. In the sixth, the flood gates burst open. Graf tripled home Amber Davis, Brasher knocked in a pair of runs, Devin Hernandez drew a bases-loaded walk, and Madison Biller hit a sac fly to make it 13-3. They added the final run on a passed ball that gave Garden City an 11-run cushion.
Biller was solid in the circle, allowing just one earned run over seven innings. She struck out seven.
Trini Perez took the loss for Frank Phillips, yielding nine runs on 11 hits in six innings.
Garden City rode Denney to a win in the finale.
The sophomore pitcher was sensational, limiting Frank Phillips to just five hits over seven innings. And she got plenty of support.
Vivian Lopez broke open a scoreless game in the fourth with a two-out, two-run double. That was followed by Brasher's two-run single that made it 4-0. After the Plainsmen got a run back in the bottom half, Graf crushed any hopes of a Frank Phillips comeback an inning later, sending a 1-2 pitch over the wall in left for 5-1 advantage. The Broncbusters added two more in the sixth, one of which came on Justus DeLeon's error in left that allowed (Gaby) Hernandez to score with the other coming on Denny's RBI double that put Garden City up 7-1.
Graf finished 3-for-4 at the dish with an RBI and Lopez collected two hits and knocked in two.
