Garden City men qualify two for indoor nationals
Lincoln, Neb.-Doug Marshall made his Head Coaching debut over the weekend as Garden City opened up the indoor track season in Nebraska.
The Broncbuster qualified two for nationals with Dewayne Reed finishing fifth in the long jump and Brian Rodriguez taking home fifth place in the pole vault at the 2018 Graduate Classic at the University of Nebraska.
"Overall, it was a good start to the season," Marshall said.
Reed leaped 23 feet, 6 inches—coming in as the second highest Junior College finisher behind Barton County's Bradley Fleurinord. Nebraska's Isaiah Griffith took first with a jump of 24-07.75.
Rodriguez was fantastic in his own right. His vault of 14-07.50 was good for fifth, and was also second best at the Junior College ranks behind Cowley's Nathan Vann. Rodriguez is currently ranked first in the nation.
In other events, Jonathan Smith took 13th in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.07 and was sixth in the 200-meters, coming in at 22.46. Tre McClary finished 26th in the 200 while Denim Rogers was fourth in the high jump at 1.89 meters and ninth in the 60-meter hurdles-recording a time of 8.59 seconds.
Garden City returns to action on Friday, Jan. 19 at the Cavalier Night Relays in Kansas City before heading to Lubbock the following week for the Texas Tech Invitational.
