DeSchutter wins Cactus Thaw; Broncbusters take third
El Paso, TX-Broncbuster sophomore Anthony DeSchutter claimed his third tournament title of the year while Garden City finished third at The Cactus Thaw Tournament at Painted Dunes Desert Golf Course.
"It was a pretty good start to the spring season in very tough weather conditions," Head Coach, Phil Terpstra said.
DeSchutter, who also won the Central Kansas Classic and the Crestview Invitational back in September, was tremendous on Tuesday, burying four birdies including a 20-foot putt on 18 that sealed the victory. He shot a 71 in the final round and finished 1-under for the tournament. He was even through the first 18 holes on Monday.
"Anthony's short game was on full display," Terpstra said.
Joshua Balson-Scales also posted a top-10 finish, coming in 8th at 10-over par. He bounced back from a first-round 80 to post a 2-over, 74 during Tuesday's final round. The sophomore moved up 14 spots over the final 18 holes, ending his day with a birdie on 18.
"Josh had a very good second round," Terpstra explained.
Akarachai Sakunlee tied for 21st at 15-over and Jackson Koksal shot 32-over.
Former Broncbuster Adam Samnegard took third at 3-over par. Western New Mexico won the team title, and Odessa College finished second.
"It was a good showing against the NO. 1 and No. 9 teams in the country," Terpstra stated.
