Garden City, KS-It had been a while since any Broncbuster quarterback had thrown for more than 300 yards in a game; nearly two years in fact.
But that changed on Saturday as Nate Cox threw for 302 yards and two scores vs. Coffeyville, becoming the first Garden City signal caller since Terry Wilson to accomplish the feat, earning Jayhawk Offensive Player of the Week honors on Thursday.
"We wanted to show everyone that we could throw the ball too," Head Coach Tom Minnick said. "We were able to go over the top."
Cox opened the game by completing his first four passes. His first bomb came on the first play of the game when he hit MJ Link for 53 yards. For the day, he was 11-for-18.
"We need to show teams that we can throw it," Minnick said. "We didn't do a great job with deep balls up until the Coffeyville game."
Cox currently leads the conference in passing yards and is second in attempts with 177. That in itself is pretty impressive considering Garden City is seventh in the nation in rushing attempts.
The fifth-ranked Broncbusters are back home on Saturday hosting No. 4 Hutchinson. Kickoff set for 1 p.m. Special admission prices for this week: $2 for adults…$1 for students and seniors…Free admission to anyone who brings two canned food items.
