Broncbusters take first two from Western Nebraska
By Mike Pilosof
Falcon, CO-On Saturday, Garden City showed that they can win in many different ways.
Eric Heiman and Steve Ramos combined to pitched a three-hit shutout while Brock Johnson collected three hits as the Broncbusters took the first two games from Western Nebraska 1-0 and 7-2 at Falcon High School.
In the opener, the Broncbusters gave Heiman an early cushion on Corbin Truslow's RBI single in the first. That's all the offense Garden City needed.
Heiman retired seven of the first eight batters that he faced, giving up his first hit on a one-out single in the third. He yielded a double in the fourth and a single in the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh, Ramos slammed the door shut, working around a one-out walk by getting Matt Womack to ground into a game-ending double play.
Heiman fanned five while throwing only 85 pitches in six innings.
The Broncbusters won the second game in more conventional fashion.
After spotting the Cougars a 1-0 lead, the Broncbusters broke it open with a five-run third inning, fueled by Jonson's bases-clearing triple. A balk and a hit by pitch accounted for the other two runs in the frame.
After Western Nebraska got a run back in the bottom of the third, Garden City added some insurance a couple of innings later. Alec Eskenazi had an RBI groundout in the fifth, and Turner McDonald added a run-scoring double in the sixth to make it 7-2.
Jordan Yates got the start for Garden City, allowing one run on five hits in two innings. Paxton Robinson pitched a third of an inning of scoreless relief, and Connery O'Donnell legged out four innings, striking out six.
