Broncbusters drop first home game of the season
By Mike Pilosof
Garden City, KS-For the first time this season, the Broncbusters were on the wrong end at home.
Garden City could not overcome an early six-run deficit, falling to Lamar 9-7 Wednesday afternoon at Williams Stadium.
The Lopes jumped on starter Brandt Sobczak in the second, scoring on Kavan Andrew's RBI triple and Owen Reynolds RBI groundout. In the third, Tarig Levesque and Logan Mayrose led off with back-to-back singles. After Lincoln Choate reached on a bunt single to load the bases, Justin Martinez mashed a two-run single to make it 4-0. They pushed the lead to 6-0 in the fourth when reliever Aaron Peach issued consecutive bases-loaded walks. The inning could have been a lot worse, but Peach worked out of trouble by getting Kennedy Badgett to pop out to short before inducing a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat.
Garden City (6-3) mounted another comeback, fueled by Darian Burns two-run shot in the fourth. The Broncbusters then added two runs in the fifth on Lamar miscues, cutting the deficit to 6-4.
But Lamar had their own counterpunch in the eighth, sparked by Aaron Faragaliah's solo homer to left. A bases-loaded free pass followed by Stone Romero's RBI single made it 9-4.
The Broncbusters made one final push in the bottom of the inning when Gino Bourget smacked a two-run double before Ty Lightley's extra base hit brought Bourget around to make it 9-7. But with the bases loaded and nobody out, Garden City failed to produce another run. Robbie Young flew out to left, Corbin Truslow struck out swinging, and Chris Lara flew out harmlessly to center ending the rally.
Sobczak took the loss for Garden City, allowing four runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out one. Colby Carleson notched the win for Lamar, throwing an inning of relief and fanning one.
