Szpott named national athlete of the week
Garden City, KS-When it comes to distance runners, there is no one better right now than Garden City cross-country star Sandra Szpott.
The sophomore earned national recognition on Monday as she was named as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross County athlete of the week.
Szpott is coming off a virtuoso performance at the Papa John's Invitational at Emporia State, finishing first, nearly 30 seconds in front of NCAA-competitor Sierra Mortensen from Washburn University.
Two weeks ago, the nation's top distance runner, won the Buster Pre-Regional Meet at Buffalo Dunes before a second-place finish in Colby in early September. She won the Allen Community College Invite and was named the Jayhawk Athlete of the Week in September.
Szpott and the Broncbusters will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 7 at the Fort Hays State Tiger Invite.
