Szpott gets early season recognition
Garden City, KS-What a start to the season for sophomore transfer Sandra Szpott. And it got even better on Tuesday.
Szpott was named the Jayhawk Conference cross country athlete of the week.
Already ranked as the top long-distance runner in the country, Szpott took home first place in the women's 4K at the Allen County Invitational with an average mile of 5:49.4. She followed that up a week later with a second-place finish in Colby.
The polish native (she's originally from Wyrzysk, a small town in Northwestern Poland), who transferred from New Mexico Military, finished third at nationals last year in the 5,00 meters becoming the first-ever Cadet in program history to finish that high.
Szpott's running success is a direct correlation with her genetics. Her mom ran cross country while her dad and grandfather ran track. She competed in the Polish U23 national championships last summer.
