Broncbusters name Schlegel new assistant athletic director
By Mike Pilosof
Garden City, KS-When John Green took over as Garden City Community College athletic director two years ago, he promised a brighter future. Part of that prophecy included hiring a new assistant athletic director following the resignation of Dan Delgado.
24 months later, Green found the man that will reside in the office next door to his.
On Thursday, Green named former Odessa Junior College assistant baseball and softball coach Kevin Schlegel as the Broncbusters new assistant athletic director.
"Kevin is a forward thinker," Green said during Schlegel's introductory press conference. "He just got here today, and he already had like 12 new ideas."
Schlegel arrives in Garden City after a four-year run at Odessa. In addition to his coaching duties, Schlegel was an administrative assistant for the athletic department, running game-day operations for all sporting events.
"I chose Garden City because I like the small town atmosphere," the Oklahoma City-native said. "I've been around junior college, and I loved the experience."
Schlegel, 30, also had stops at Frank Phillips College and his alma-mater Nicholls State, where he was the director of baseball operations from 2011-2012.
"I'm coming into a great situation," Schlegel said. "Obviously coming off a national championship in football; getting ready to kick that off, and all of our other sports, which are growing-I just wanted to be a part of it."
Schlegel is a former standout athlete at Putnam City North High School. He was named one of the top five catchers in the Sooner state by The Daily Oklahoma his senior season.
After taking home all-city and all-state honors, Schlegel signed to play baseball at Northeast Texas Community College in 2006. The following season, he played in the Texas/New Mexico Coaches All-Star Game. After two years, he transferred to Nicholls State, eventually earning his Bachelor's degree in general studies.
"I've heard so many great things about the community support here," Schlegel said.
The new assistant takes over the position once held by Delgado, who is now the athletic director at Syracuse High School.
"He brings a lot of creativity," Green said. "I expect him to pick things up and run with them."
As for some of the things that Schlegel brings to the table:
"I've done it all—from websites to social media, which has absolutely exploded over the past four or five years."
College President Dr. Herbert Swender, gave his full stamp of approval.
"We are really excited to have Kevin on board," Swender said. "All of our sports programs are heading in the right direction, and I'm glad Kevin will be a part of that."
